Dining at The French Laundry: Was It Worth It? How Did We Get a Reservation?

When we planned our trip to Yountville, one of the most exciting (and nerve-wracking) parts was securing a reservation at The French Laundry, Thomas Keller’s iconic three-Michelin-starred restaurant. It’s one of those once-in-a-lifetime dining experiences, and after finally experiencing it, I can confidently say:

Was It Worth It?

100% yes! The French Laundry is more than just a meal—it’s a meticulously curated experience, from the impeccable service to the artistry of each dish. Every course felt intentional, balanced, and beautifully plated. It’s a true celebration of fine dining, and if you appreciate food as an art form, it’s absolutely worth it.

How Did We Get a Reservation?

Reservations open on the first of every month for two months out, and they go fast. Our friends logged on at 10 AM PST sharp Here and managed to snag a Friday, February 7th reservation for six people. Be prepared to pay a deposit upfront, which covers the base meal price, with the remainder due at the restaurant for food upgrades and drinks.

The Dining Experience

We were seated inside the main dining room, which felt intimate and elegant. The menu consists of nine courses, and while everything was outstanding, a few highlights (and surprises) stood out:

  • Wine Pairing: I opted for two glasses of wine, while my husband and a few friends did the wine pairing. The pairings range in price depending on the budget you provide your sommelier.
  • Caviar Course Upgrade ($60): I upgraded to the premium caviar course, which was delicious—but honestly, the standard option was just as good.
  • Truffle Mac & Cheese Upgrade ($160): This was my biggest regret! It was tasty but not worth the price. The alternative was squab (pigeon), which my husband loved, but I just couldn’t do it.
  • Dessert Course: Surprisingly, this was my favorite part! There were so many mini desserts, but the affogato was the standout. At the end, they brought out a selection of handmade truffles with flavors like peanut butter and jelly, pistachio, and more.

To wrap up the experience, they offer a kitchen tour, which makes you feel special—until you realize every table gets the same treatment (still fun, though!).

The Price Tag

Our meal came out to $900 per person, including upgrades and drinks. It’s a splurge and definitely not an every-year kind of thing, but for a special occasion, it’s absolutely worth it. Would I do it again? Yes—but probably not for a few years.

Where We Stayed

We loved staying down the street at Hotel Villagio—a perfect, luxurious spot to return to after an indulgent meal. You can read all my other Yountville recommendations here.
