If you’re looking for a picturesque fall getaway, Napa Valley should be at the top of your list. This stunning region, famous for its rolling vineyards and world-class wines, transforms into a kaleidoscope of colors as autumn settles in. We recently spent a delightful weekend at the Alila Napa Valley in St. Helena, perfectly positioned to explore some of our favorite wineries and dining spots.
Day 1:
Our journey began with a smooth flight into the Santa Rosa Airport. If you have the option, I highly recommend flying into this quaint airport—it feels almost private with its small size and easy logistics. After a 45 minute frive, we arrived at the Alila Napa Valley, a serene retreat just a few blocks from downtown St. Helena.
Once we dropped off our bags, we headed straight to Violetta, the hotel’s on-site restaurant, for lunch. With its seasonal menu and beautiful ambiance, it was the perfect way to kick off our Napa adventure.
Afternoon Tastings
Post-lunch, we took advantage of the Alila Napa Valley shuttle service, which ferries guests to nearby destinations (within 6 miles of the hotel). Our first winery stop was Joseph Phelps, where we were welcomed by our knowledgeable host, Jonathon. His enthusiasm and expertise made our tasting experience truly memorable, as we sipped on some exquisite wines while taking in the stunning vineyard views.
Afterward, we had a little downtime, so we decided to pop over to Ana's Cantina for a refreshing beer. It’s a charming spot that offers a nice break between wine tastings.
Next up was Wheeler Farms, a hidden gem known for its boutique wines. Our host, Dexter, shared the story of their sustainable farming practices and their commitment to growing vegetables on-site. (I must add that last year we enjoyed a private lunch here that was nothing short of amazing, so don’t miss that opportunity if you can!)
Evening Dining
After a delightful day of tastings, we returned to the Alila to unwind before dinner. For our evening meal, we chose Charlie’s, a beloved local spot known for its vibrant atmosphere and delicious dishes. The perfect ending to our first day in Napa!
Day 2:
After a vibrant Day 1 filled with tastings and delicious meals, we embraced a more mellow pace on Day 2. We strolled into downtown St. Helena for breakfast at Gillwoods Cafe, a charming diner that serves up homestyle meals with a side of local flair. The moment you step inside, you’re greeted by a warm atmosphere and the tantalizing aroma of fresh coffee and pancakes. It was the perfect way to fuel up for our day of exploration.
Following breakfast, we wandered through the picturesque town, which felt like it had leapt right out of a Hallmark movie. Quaint shops, beautiful architecture, and vibrant autumn foliage surrounded us, making for a delightful morning stroll.
After our leisurely walk, we returned to the Alila to prepare for our first winery visit of the day: Duckhorn Vineyards. Once again, we made use of the Alila Napa Valley shuttle, which made transportation a breeze. Duckhorn is known for its exceptional Merlot and lush estate grounds, and we were eager to dive into their offerings.
After our tasting, we decided to spend the rest of the afternoon soaking up the sun by the Alila Napa Valley pool. With delicious cocktails and a tasty poolside menu, it was the perfect way to unwind after a busy couple of days.
As night fell, we prepared for a truly special experience: the Palmaz Asado Dinner. Set atop a hill with stunning views, Palmaz Vineyard offers a unique blend of history and winemaking excellence. The story of the Palmaz family is fascinating, intertwining innovation and tradition—a must-read if you’re visiting the area.
We joined around 50 other members of the Palmaz wine club for a sumptuous four-course meal, each dish beautifully paired with their exceptional wines. The atmosphere was lively, with everyone sharing stories and enjoying the delicious food.
After dinner, we ventured into their candlelit wine cave for more tastings. The ambiance was enchanting, and the music added a lovely touch to the intimate setting. Sipping on exquisite wines while surrounded by the soft glow of candlelight was the perfect way to cap off our day.
For anyone planning a similar trip, I recommend limiting your winery visits to two per day. This way, you can fully enjoy each tasting without feeling rushed and still have time to savor a wonderful dinner.
